Bedford Borough Local Plan 2040 Plan for Submission

Representation ID: 9414

Received: 29/07/2022

Respondent: Ms Lorraine Jewell

Representation Summary:

The arc scheme as a whole and the Bedford to Cambridge routes in particular need to be revisited in terms of value for money, environmental soundness and whether this railway should be a priority given the pressures on essential services of which this is not one!

Full text:

The environmental impact of certain routes could be devastating to green belt, high quality agricultural land. Also the requirement to ‘lift’ the railway up out of the Bedford basin would be expensive and cut through green areas enjoyed within walking distance of Bedford and North Beds residents alike. The consultations over routes for Bedford to Cambridge Arc need to be more transparent and challenged environmentally as well no as financially. There seems to be an assumption that the arc railway is a good thing. This requires further consultation/research to ensure its viability as an expensive undertaking at a time of government cuts to essential services.
