Bedford Borough Local Plan 2040 Plan for Submission

Representation ID: 9210

Received: 23/06/2022

Respondent: Mr Anthony Roche

Representation Summary:

I note with considerable concern the retention of the proposal to accommodate up to 500 new homes in Sharnbrook, particularly relative to the already existing significant traffic constraints within the infrastructure of that village. The arterial roads from Sharnbrook, passing through Odell and Harrold between the A6 and the A428 have substantial existing congestion problems, particularly in Harrold where historical road widths and extensive roadside parking effectively creates a single lane roadway. Further traffic is likely to be generated from the 2040 plan which will exacerbate an already unacceptable and challenging situation. With the growing volumes of traffic likely to emerge from the plan and years beyond, a more radical solution needs to be sought. The development in Sharnbrook in the 2040 Local Plan will also increase demand on the local services that residents of Odell depend on i.e. GP surgery, local schools, congested roads with inadequate capacity, both in the centre of Sharnbrook and the trunk roads / access routes north, south, east and west (through Odell) from the new developments.

Respondent: Luton & Bedfordshire Green Party

Representation Summary:

We reject the notion that the vast majority of policies do not need to change. We outlined in our earlier submission significant areas where the policies were not consistent with driving a net zero agenda, increasing biodiversity, tackling deprivation, delivering appropriate housing or transitioning to a green economy.

Respondent: Wilden Parish Council

Representation Summary:

• The 500 homes to be built at Great Barford. We ask that guaranteed new facilities be written into the planning permissions for these homes. For example, the Doctor’s surgery in Silver Street. This is already over-subscribed, making it extremely difficult for our parishioners to get an appointment. The prospect of an extra 1,500-2,000 new patients in Great Barford must surely demand a new Dr’s surgery with adequate parking and access by public transport. This surgery must have an attached pharmacy, as per the Silver Street premise, in order for the needs of present and future residents to be met. We also request that contractors working on these new buildings are not allowed to take short-cuts through Wilden. They should be required to ensure all heavy vehicles, accessing the large new building sites, travel on the Bedford Road/St.Neots Road/Roxton Road/A6/A1/A421.
