SUPPORT: Equestrian use and development is an important part of the rural landscape and economy and merits specific policy support within the Local Plan.
As identified at supporting paragraph 6.69, equestrian development supports job creation in rural areas. In addition to providing economic gain to the rural economy, it also promotes land management, health and well-being and a connection with the natural environment.
We do suggest a simplification of the title of the policy and wording of the introductory paragraph to provide greater clarity. The proposed changes are:
‘Policy DM9 Equestrian Development and Activities’
and
‘Proposals for equestrian development and will be permitted provided that the proposal would:…..’
Other than that, we have no further comments and support this policy.

We note that this policy refers to policy 42S. Should it also refer to 41S? Do the policies need to cross refer to other policies? If so, important to be consistent for natural and historic environment, but if not, then may not be needed.

Policy DM9 Horse & Equestrian development/activities – The inclusion, for the first time, of a policy relating to equestrian activity is very much to be welcomed. However, the policy should amended in two important ways:
a. Requirement i. should read: “not have an adverse impact on the character and appearance of the countryside or nearby settlements; and”
b. Requirement iii. should read: ”not generate unacceptable volumes of horsebox traffic on inappropriate local roads but comply with an agreed Transport Plan to ensure safe and acceptable forms of access;”
