Local Plan 2040 Draft Plan - Strategy options and draft policies consultation

Representation ID: 3764

Received: 23/08/2021

Respondent: Mr Graham Mills

Representation Summary:

1,275 new dwellings each year is a major increase on the number on the Local Plan 2030 and it is unsustainable in Bedford Borough without very substantial infrastructure investment. The road network around Bedford, especially the single carriageway bypass to the west and northwest. The A6 towards Rushden is completely congested and over-capacity during weekdays for travel to/from work and schools. Parking at Bedford station is completely inadequate - often there are no spaces to park there from 8:30am onwards on weekdays, in normal pre-pandemic conditions.

1,275 new dwellings each year is a major increase on the number on the Local Plan 2030 and it is unsustainable in Bedford Borough without very substantial infrastructure investment, over and above what's already planned. The road network around Bedford, especially the single carriageway bypass to the west and northwest, is totally inadequate, there is no bypass linking the north of Bedford to the east, other than through the town or via small villages. The A6 towards Rushden is completely congested and over-capacity during weekdays for travel to/from work and schools. Parking at Bedford station is completely inadequate - often there are no spaces to park there from 8:30am onwards on weekdays, in normal pre-pandemic conditions. Drivers are reverting to using minor roads through villages and residential areas to avoid the congestion on the trunks roads around and through Bedford. This needs to be dealt with by a major programme of junction improvements and dual carriageway upgrades to all of the A roads linking Bedford and its villages to its neighbouring towns and cities.
